The Great Greenway Clearup, with Thames Water

11 May 2017

The weather was foreboding this morning, but we were delighted to be involved in the Great Greenway Clean-up, organised by Thames Water.

35 volunteers met outside our offices at the View Tube, including our property guardians, students from Chobham Academy and members of staff from Thames Water, Poplar HARCA and Dot Dot Dot. The team from London Borough of Newham supplied litter-pickers, gloves and rubbish bags and the crew of volunteers did the rest.

Guardians on the Greenway

The small army of volunteers then manoeuvred their way down the Greenway, clearing as they went. Poplar HARCA kindly funded the planting of wildflowers on the parts of the Greenway that were cleared. Hopefully this will make for some lovely results in a few months’ time!

Amongst the team of volunteers were a number of Dot Dot Dot guardians who had come along especially. Arran, who lives nearby in Canning Town said, “I work in a bar, so I had the morning off and I’m happy to help out. Clearing up the path helps clear your head too!”

It was great to see the enthusiasm these guardians had for helping clear up this part of East London, and we’re grateful they could make it down.

Today was a great success, with much more to follow soon

When the hard work was done we returned to The Common Greenway. This is the new cafe that will shortly be opening at the View Tube, and they very kindly hosted us for hot drinks and a well-earned cookie or two. The opening of The Common Greenway cafe is the next step in the development of the View Tube. We’re pleased that Poplar HARCA and Thames Water continue to support this important community venue… watch this space for more exciting news this year.

Ted Maxwell, Dot Dot Dot’s Head of Marketing & Special Projects, said:

“What an excellent morning. Working together, we cleared up a stretch of an important footpath and cycle route in East London. Dot Dot Dot is a social enterprise which houses people who contribute to the local community through their volunteering, so today has been a perfect opportunity for our staff to practise what we preach.

“Our whole business approach is based on collaborating with a wide range of partners for the good of the community. We therefore see today as part of our ongoing partnership with Poplar HARCA, Thames Water, London Borough of Newham and local schools in order to support the View Tube, the Greenway and the local neighbourhoods.”
